The first meal I cooked for my now-husband/then-boyfriend included gravy bread*. At the time I assumed everyone ate this delicious treat. It wasn’t until years later I learned it was food poor people ate — a way to stretch the roast from the day before.
*Stack, in this order:
- Gravy (hot)
- Roast beef (cold)
- Bread (white)
Perhaps he found thrift to be another of your attractive qualities.
It turned out that his family ate it too, from time to time.
This does not sound appealing. I would have dumped you immediately.
LOL
It’s a roast beef sandwich – replacing the chutney with gravy. So seems perfectly reasonable. Also, peasant food is often the best food in the world!
I forgot to say that the beef is optional, but yes, it’s basically an open-face beef sandwich. (We would probably not have thought to add chutney, but it sounds like a good idea. Or Branston pickle.)
I ate a lot of poor folk food growing up and it took me a long time to realize it. I find most of it still my favorites, though I use more seasoning than just the salt and pepper from back then.
