As we’ve aged we’ve become more inclined to keep the air conditioning on in the summer. The last few nights it has been cool and dry enough to keep the air conditioning off and the windows open. Last night I realized how much I’d missed the nightsong outside the window. Crickets (even snowy-tree crickets) and katydids. I love their song.
NIcely done. We left the heating off last night, and the windows are open today. But we still get the birdsong regardless. Maybe NZ birds are just loud.
We are loving the return of cool, dry nights, but the katydids do get on my nerves! I think that this is because they love oaks, and we live in a majority oak woods — katydid metropolis. Some nights their song gets so loud the world pulsates with their beat. They are beginning to thin out, however, as the temperatures drop.
